Dermal Filler

What is dermal filler?

Dermal fillers aka “fillers” are a popular and effective way to reduce wrinkles and improve skin. Today, let’s talk filler types, benefits/risks associated with the treatments, and cost of treatment.

The advancement of dermal fillers has been crucial in the aesthetic industry. There are currently a variety of different types of dermal fillers available on the market. Fillers can really be categorized into two main types, natural and synthetic. Natural fillers are derived from natural sources, such as hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring molecule found in the human body. This is the type of filler we use at Smithville Med Spa. Synthetic fillers are man-made and include polylactic acid, silicone and hydroxyapatite. It is important to work with an experienced and licensed injector to make the decision on what filler would be best for you.

Dermal filler treatments have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their ability to reduce the signs of aging in the face. Filler is minimally invasive and can produce results very quickly, often visible before you leave the office.

What are the risks and benefits?

Just like with any medical procedure, there are both benefits and risks associated with the use of fillers. The main benefit of filler treatments is the ability to improve the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and creases in the face as well as restore volume. The results can last anywhere from six months to several years depending on the type of dermal filler used. We use RHA which is the longest lasting hyaluronic acid filler on the market. Longevity depends on type of filler, placement, and locations on your face. Our product usually lasts a minimum of 9-12 months in the lips and 18 months or longer in somewhere like cheeks or tear troughs. Filler treatments are typically safe and require little to no recovery time. You may have a few days of bruising or swelling and we always recommend at least 2 weeks before any major life event or pictures that will last a lifetime.

Filler does have potential risks associated with it.  Some risks include bruising, redness, swelling, and infection at the treatment site. Bruising and swelling, although temporary, tend to be common side effects. While infection is quite rare. In some cases, the filler may also migrate to other areas of the face, leading to an uneven appearance. One of the worst case scenarios, is something called a vascular occlusion. This is when filler gets into or near a blood vessel and interrupts blood supply to an area. Sometimes things can go wrong even with a skilled injector, but we do always recommend you check the background and licensure of your injector. Your injector should also be educating you on what to look for if something goes wrong and provide immediate support in that case.  Overall, dermal filler treatments can be a safe and effective way to reduce the signs of aging in the face.

What is the cost?

The cost of dermal filler treatments can vary significantly depending on the type of filler and location. Our prices are always provided on our website. Although we know that it is tempting to shop around to get a deal, the cheapest injector is often not the best. If you’re going to put something in your face that lasts a year or longer, you want it to be done right. It is important to ensure that your injector is experienced and knowledgeable in the product being used and that the treatment is performed in a safe and sterile environment.
